Caverns of Luray

Last updated 29 December 2014: Replaced screenshot with video.

Caverns of Luray is a dungeon, which is found randomly in Paths of the Drowned (act 5). It consists of two levels inhabited by Maggots, Maggot Broods, Cave Bats and Lashing Creepers.

The interesting thing about Caverns of Luray is that it may spawn with two different "main objects" spread across each dungeon level:
  •  Decayed Deserter's Corpses
  •  Decaying Boggits

Depending on the objects spawned, you tend to find different events and enemies. So far, I have found three different dungeon "variations", each with its own characteristic (it is, of course, possible that there exists more variations and characteristics than the ones I have found).

Decayed Deserter's Corpses spawned on both levels

If both levels spawn with this object, you may on either level (or both levels if you are lucky) find a small, unnamed "event" with a Resplendent Chest guarded by a bunch of Decayed Deserter's Corpses. The corpses come alive and attack you, when you open the chest. The Resplendent Chest is not guaranteed to spawn on either of the levels though. You will also find a good amount of Deserter's Packs with Deserter's Journal, Part 1-5, on both levels. For some reason, Maggot and Maggot Brood enemies don't seem to spawn on level 2 in this dungeon variation.

Decaying Boggits spawned on both levels

If both levels are filled with Decaying Boggits, it seems impossible to find Deserter's Packs on level 1. I have found a few on level 2 but they have not been a regular find.

Instead, whenever the Boggits spawned on both levels, I have found the event "The Brood Mother" on level 2. The event is part of the achievement "The Bog Slog" and requires you to kill Maggotburst and her horde of Maggots.

Decaying Boggits on level 1, Decayed Deserter's Corpses on level 2

As the second level spawns with Decayed Deserter's Corpses, you may be lucky to find the guarded Resplendent Chest but only on this level. The second level may further spawn with Maggots and Maggot Broods unlike the previous variation with Decayed Deserter's Corpses on both levels.

  1. I've been at this quest for days. This is the most accurate BAR NONE description of the Brood Mother event. I've run the Caves of Luray some 10-12 times with no event spawning. Not until I got decaying boggits on both levels did she spawn.

  3. Thanks, it happened exactly what you said!

First try I got corpse/corpse and a resplendent chest.
Second try boggit/boggit and the brood mother event started.

  5. How rare is the cavern itself? I have farmed paths at least 30x and have never seen it.

    1. I unfortunately don't know how rare the cavern is but it has never been that difficult for me to find it. If you have been through Paths of the Drowned 30 times without seeing it, I'll say you've been very unlucky.

I've made a quick run just now and can confirm that the cavern at least still exists. I'm playing the PC version of the game and found the cavern in Adventure Mode on torment 10 with a seasonal Witch Doctor.

As a side note, I've never seen Perilous Cave and Caverns of Luray at the same time in Paths of the Drowned. If you find Perilous Cave, or if Perilous Cave is part of a bounty, just leave the game and try again.

  6. Yes,I submit the thing about the Decaying Boggits too, they have to be spawned on both levels in order to get the event, so if you see Decayed Deserter's Corpses inside the cave I think that you could as well leave the game and give it another go. About the Caverns of Luray themselves, yes they are spawned in Paths of the Drowned (Act V) and I'd say that there's a big chance to get them, they could be present on the map even if the Winding Cave is already spawned, my guess being that Cavers of Luray share spawn chance with Perilous Cave, so if you get the Perilous Cave, as mentioned in the other comments, just leave the game. As last tip, try looking for the cave by exploring the side of the map at first. That should be all. Best of luck!

    1. Also, for statistics, I've got the Caverns 4 times out of 8, with the first 3 tries ending in failure due to Decayed Deserter's Corpses spawn, so I managed to get the event on the 4th try that I got the Caverns.

  7. Thank you!!! Thanks to your tips I tackled the Bog Slog finally! It took me about 20 runs to find the first CoL and after that aanother 10 runs to find CoL with decaying boggits only! It seems to me the more often you try, the more frequently the CoL spawns. Very frustrating challenge... Good luck everyone!

  8. I had to grab Adria's Journals 1-9 from the Blood Marsh waypoint area before the double decaying boggits floorplan would unlock.
