Act 5: Pandemonium Fortress Level 1

Introduction

There are three big reasons to go Goblin hunting:
  • The Vault (introduced in patch 2.1.0).
The Vault is a small area, where you can find lots of gold and get the legendary gem "Boon of the Hoarder" after killing the boss "Greed". Whenever you kill a Goblin, there is a small chance that a portal to the Vault may open (tip: if you just want the Vault without hunting Goblins, you can place a Puzzle Ring in Kanai's Cube and press the "Transmute" button).
  • Pets from the Menagerist Goblin (goblin introduced in patch 2.4.1).
When you kill a Menagerist Goblin, it drops a white "pet item" (unless you have acquired all its pets), which adds a new pet to your collection once you right-click it.
  • The Cosmetic Item "Cosmic Wings".
If you want the Cosmic Wings, kill a Rainbow Goblin and take its portal to Whimsydale. If you are lucky, you will find a unique unicorn called "Princess Lilian", which drops this Cosmetic Item.

As I've seen several, sometimes exaggerated, recommendations on where to find the most Goblins, I've gathered my own Goblin statistics, which you can find below. Use my statistics to create a Goblin farm route you like or, if you already have a preferred route, compare it with my results.

Please note:
  • I can't guarantee that my statistics are correct or will match your experiences. I might have forgotten to note some Goblins, I might have too little data or the Goblin spawn rate could have been affected by something I'm not aware of.
  • Since more than one Goblin may appear during a run, I note both the amount of runs that contained at least one Goblin and how many Goblins I've found in total.
  • The areas I focus on are the ones I have had success with or areas other players have recommended. Preferably, the areas should be small, quick to check and possible to find in each game. The areas reported do not necessarily have a great spawn rate.
  • All runs since patch 2.4.1 have been made with a non-seasonal, softcore monk on torment 10 in Adventure Mode.

This post might get heavily updated if I get more data or if a new patch is released. Hopefully, more sections will be added over time.

Summary

Area The area I made the runs in. I've made 200 runs in each area.
Runs with min 1 Goblin Some areas have more than 1 Goblin. This is the number of runs where I found at least 1 Goblin.
Total Goblins The total number of Goblins found in 200 runs.
The Vault The number of times I found the Vault.
Patch The patch I made the runs in.

Area Runs with min 1 Goblin Total Goblins The Vault Patch
Act 1: Leoric's Hunting Grounds 76 out of 200 runs (38,0 %) 76 3 2.4.1
Act 1: Leoric's Passage 75 out of 200 runs (37,5 %) 75 1 2.4.1
Act 5: Pandemonium Fortress Level 1 70 out of 200 runs (35,0 %) 139 3 2.4.1
Act 1: Cave of the Moon Clan Level 1 63 out of 200 runs (31,5 %) 63 1 2.4.1
Act 2: Sewers of Caldeum 60 out of 200 runs (30,0 %) 60 2 2.4.1
Act 1: Cave of the Moon Clan Level 2 59 out of 200 runs (29,5 %) 59 0 2.4.1
Act 1: Northern Highlands 58 out of 200 runs (29,0 %) 58 0 2.4.1
Act 3: The Core of Arreat 33 out of 200 runs (16,5 %) 33 0 2.4.1

Goblins Percentage Total Goblins The Vault
Treasure Goblin 35,9 % 202 4
Gem Hoarder 14,0 % 79 1
Blood Thief 10,8 % 61 2
Odious Collector 8,0 % 45 1
Gelatinous Sire 6,9 % 39 0
Insufferable Miscreant 6,9 % 39 0
Gilded Baron 6,6 % 37 2
Malevolent Tormentor 4,4 % 25 0
Menagerist Goblin 4,3 % 24 0
Rainbow Goblin 2,1 % 12 0

Please note that the spawn rate of the Vault is probably greater than the one reported here. Some areas (like Cave of the Moon Clan) are done sequentially and if I get the Vault from the first Goblin, the second Goblin can't spawn it. Additionally, a first-split Gelatinous Spawn and a second-split Gelatinous Spawn got away.

Act 1: Leoric's Passage

Leoric's Passage is quick to check once you get to it. Though it is possible to access the area through Cathedral Level 1 and Cathedral Level 2, I prefer to teleport to The Old Ruins and follow the path from there.

Act 1: Cave of the Moon Clan

Cave of the Moon Clan is a relatively linear dungeon found in Southern Highlands (see the maps below for its possible locations). If you are lucky, you will find a Goblin on each level.

Act 1: Northern Highlands and Leoric's Hunting Grounds

Two areas which can be checked relatively fast. In all runs, I've taken the waypoint to Northern Highlands and then accessed Leoric's Hunting Grounds through the northern staircase.

Total Goblins found

- Runs with 0 Goblins:
- Runs with 1 Goblin:
58 Goblins in 200 runs

Act 2: Sewers of Caldeum

The area is easily accessed if you use the waypoint "City of Caldeum". In the sewers, you might be lucky to find Moontooth Dreadshark, which can drop The Murlocket.

- Runs with 0 Goblins:
- Runs with 1 Goblin:
60 Goblins in 200 runs

140 out of 200 runs

Act 3: The Core of Arreat

The Core of Arreat was once a great place to find Goblins but my results have been disappointing since patch 2.2.0. The area is rather fast to run through though.

Total Goblins found

- Runs with 0 Goblins:
- Runs with 1 Goblin:
33 Goblins in 200 runs

167 out of 200 runs
33 out of 200 runs
Latest runs made in patch 2.4.1

Act 5: Pandemonium Fortress Level 1

Usually, Pandemonium Fortress Level 1 have exactly 0 or 2 Goblins - but two times (once in patch 2.2.0 and once in patch 2.4.1) I've had a run with only a single Goblin, despite looking in every corner of the map. The Goblins may spawn close to each other but they could also be in the opposite ends of the area.

Total Goblins found

- Runs with 0 Goblins:
- Runs with 1 Goblin:
- Runs with 2 Goblins:
139 Goblins in 200 runs

130 out of 200 runs
1 out of 200 runs

  1. Awesome. Thanks for the stats. :)

I noticed all the areas mentioned have about a 30% chance of spawning at least one goblin. That seems high, but then maybe that's why those areas are the best for goblin hunting; it would be interesting to compare these stats to similar ones for other areas.

The obvious highlights are the Pandemonium Fortress and the Caverns of Araneae. Even though both have lower chances to spawn goblins, both have a chance to spawn two goblins, which raises the overall number of goblins per N runs even above the number for the other areas. Guess these two are now my favourite goblin hunting grounds.

Did you take note of where the Vault opened? I'm guessing it might be random, but then a lot of Diablo maths are funny, so maybe it's not all that random..

I've previously found two goblins in a single run in the same section of the Tower of the Cursed; the same goes for the Tower of the Damned. Then again, I haven't taken note of the goblin spawn rate there, so maybe these areas are worse than the ones you've listed.

    1. Hi Rain

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I did take note of where the Vault opened - the Summary section has now been updated with the locations.

  2. Cheers! :) So far, where the Vault opens seems to be completely random, but more testing might reveal something different...

  3. Right after the official release of Cosmetics, some troll posted that the Mace of Crows was found in the "Cellar of the Damned" (in A1 town, where you kill Haedrig's wife Mira). Of course we now know that is not were the Mace of Crows drops. However, I did about 40-50 run thru the Cellar of the Damned looking for it, and in the process discovered that Goblins drop in the Cellar of the Damned, about once every 7-10 runs. It not a very frequent drop rate, but it is a quick and easy place to farm. Give it a try, and add it to your list if you like.
